Best Time to Call the West Coast From the East Coast

The East and West Coasts of the US are three hours apart — Pacific Time is always three hours behind Eastern Time, whether both are in standard time or both are in daylight saving (the offset doesn't change across the transition since both zones shift together).

That fixed gap makes East-to-West calls easier to plan than calls involving Hawaii or a US territory, where the gap changes seasonally since those zones don't observe daylight saving at all.

For a standard 9 AM–6 PM workday on the West Coast, the overlapping business hours window from the East Coast falls between 12 PM and 6 PM Eastern, which is 9 AM to 3 PM Pacific.

The sweet spot — avoiding the very start and end of each coast's day — is roughly 1 PM–4 PM Eastern (10 AM–1 PM Pacific), when both coasts are comfortably into their workday.

Calling before 12 PM Eastern means it's before 9 AM Pacific — too early for most West Coast offices. Calling after 6 PM Eastern means it's after 3 PM Pacific, cutting into the last hours of the West Coast workday and increasingly likely to miss people leaving early.

A 2 PM Eastern call lands at 11 AM Pacific — solidly mid-morning on the West Coast and well past the East Coast's own lunch rush, which is why it's often cited as a dependable default when no other information is available about either side's calendar.

An 8 AM Eastern call, by contrast, is only 5 AM Pacific — hours before almost any West Coast business opens, and a common scheduling mistake made by East Coast callers who don't adjust for the full three-hour gap.

For recurring calls, it's worth building in a buffer around the edges of the window rather than scheduling right at the boundary, since a meeting running slightly long at 6 PM Eastern can easily tip into after-hours territory on the West Coast side.
